Designing My Wedding

My wedding was by far the largest design project I worked on in 2025. Jack and I got engaged in March, set a date for November, and had 7.5 months to plan, design, and prepare for our wedding. It goes without saying that the things that really matter—i.e. marrying Jack—are much deeper and more meaningful than colors, flowers and fonts, but as a designer I couldn’t help but obsess a little over the visual and experiential details. So while the marriage preparation, the sacrament, and special sacredness of the whole process is what we’ll remember and cherish most, this post is simply a catalogue of the design decisions, creative details, and visual beauty that I poured lots of energy and heart into for our wedding day.

The vibe

We got married on November 7th in Minnesota. For our ceremony we had a traditional Catholic Mass, followed by a reception with our families and friends. Although it was a fall wedding, I didn't lean too much into the season for visual inspiration. The visual vibe was light and airy, classic and traditional, whimsical and delicate. We had a beautiful (cold!), overcast November day with vibrant yellow, green and orange leaves, and it all came together beautifully. Our wedding party wore all black, while the flowers, stationery, and linens were shades of blue, green, butter yellow, and soft white.

The Invitations

With a shorter engagement, we skipped save the dates and jumped right into sending invitations. I designed a simple invitation card with a decorative border featuring the floral motif that became the signature mark for our day, and a smaller card with a map of the venues and additional details. I used two very beautiful typefaces across everything — Eros and Louize.

The Website

Designing our wedding website was SO fun. I loved putting together a travel guide, illustrations for our story, and designing a user-friendly, beautiful, and informative custom website.

the Day-Of Stationery

For the ceremony, I designed programs, menus, table numbers, bar menus, guestbook and gift signs.

the flowers

Flowers were whimsical, dreamy, and so special. A big thank you to Juniper Rose Floral for bringing the vision to life and Pressed Flower Shop for preserving my bouquet in such a sweet way!

What we skipped

Weddings are incredibly special, a huge deal, and worth celebrating! But they can also be a little over the top and crazy expensive. Here are some things we skipped to keep it a bit simpler.

— A wedding planner: I designed and planned it all myself!

— New dresses: I found my wedding dress at a consignment store, and the fun dress I changed into for the dance floor was also thrifted.

— Save the dates: We sent text messages to our closest family and friends as soon as the date was finalized, and sent formal invitations plenty of time in advance.

— Specialty printing processes: I'm as obsessed with paper textures and gorgeous printing as any graphic designer, but these special touches are pretty expensive. We stuck to digital printing only for all the paper pieces, and worked with Smart Set in Minneapolis for everything.

— Favors: While part of me really wanted to design adorable custom matchbooks or art prints for all our guests, I was pressed for time and ultimately decided not to  spend the extra money and energy on these.

— Church flowers: The ceremony was beautiful enough without added decorations!

what I learned

While it was very fun and meaningful to design all the visual details of our wedding day, what I'll remember most is how it felt to marry Jack and to be surrounded by so much love from our family and friends. I am still blown away by how lucky we are to be married to each other and have such wonderful, generous, kind, fun people in our lives who showed up to support and celebrate us on such an important day.
